About us

Dr Mario Malkoun is a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon and Endoscopist in the Illawarra. After growing up in Sydney, he completed his undergraduate medical science degree at Sydney University and gained his Honours degree through the Westmead Millennium Institute in human genetics using DNA Microarray, a new technology at the time. He undertook his graduate medical degree at the University of Queensland and graduated with an MBBS in 2004.

He decided to return to NSW for his internship and chose Wollongong Hospital where he also stayed on throughout his resident year. Dr Malkoun subsequently began his surgical training where he completed terms around NSW in hospitals such as St George in Kogarah, Coffs Harbour, Tweed Heads, Albury, Campbelltown and Wollongong. He later returned to Wollongong Hospital as a surgical fellow in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery where he stayed for two years.

He now lives in Wollongong full-time and consults in Wollongong, Warrawong and Shellharbour. He operates regularly at Wollongong Private Hospital, Wollongong Day Surgery and Shellharbour Private Hospital and is happy to see all general surgical referrals.

Our services

General Surgery

Dr Malkoun consults in all aspects of surgery of the abdomen and of the skin including cancer. He specialises in hernia surgery, removal of soft tissue tumours and lymph node biopsies as well as a wide range of surgeries of the skin from benign skin lesions to skin cancers. He also performs surgery of the anus such as haemorrhoid surgery and repairs.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Also known as keyhole surgery, Dr Malkoun specialises in performing minimally invasive surgery in the abdomen. This includes removing the gallbladder via the keyhole approach and performing umbilical, inguinal and incisional hernia surgery.


Dr Malkoun performs gastroscopy for conditions such as reflux, Barretts oesophagus, painful swallowing, gastritis and stomach ulcers. He performs colonoscopy and specialises in removing large and small polyps as well as diagnosing conditions of the large bowel.
